Don’t Need No Earthly Superhero, I’ve Got God!

Growing up I loved Superman, I had a hero size crush on Clark Kent. How cool would it be to be loved by a man that was gentle, kind, compassionate and could stop a brilliant with a flyover? Then there was Spiderman and his incredible reflexes and undying love for MJ. Oh, to be loved like that!

Sometime ago, around the “we all are superheroes” fad, I made the realization that I do have a superhero that loves me. The ultimate compassionate, kind, loving, forgiving, understanding, creator of the universe, King of Kings, Lord of lords and Superhero of superheroes is the superhero that personally loves me and protects me from harm.

God is the ultimate Superman, better than Spiderman, stronger than the Hulk, more clever than Batman. There is nothing God can’t stop or conquer. In the end God will triumph over evil.

Just like Spiderman waits lovingly for MJ to decide she loves him, God patiently waits for each of us to know we need Him. He is waiting to have an intimate personal relationship with each of us.

Just like Superman and his pure love for Lois Lane, God’s love for each of us is pure. More pure, more honest, deeper, truer and never ending we just have to realize God is the hero of our lives and stop looking for the man in the cape.

Through God we can move mountains and change lives. If we choose to let God move through us we too can be heroes, saving lives and bringing the joy of God to the world.

Like Spiderman says “with great power comes great responsibility” and the power of God is great. The movies have it right, being close to or in league with a superhero will bring danger, discomfort and hard choices but the love and devotion of that hero is worth every difficult moment.

God is my Superhero. He loves me unconditionally, He knows my thoughts before I do, He supports me and is always there in times of trouble. He created the birds in the sky and the kinds that create planes. Through God I can be a hero and change the world.

Psalm 90:1-2 NASB
[1] Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. [2] Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

Exodus 15:2-3 NASB
[2] “The LORD is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will extol Him. [3] “The LORD is a warrior; The LORD is His name.

Psalm 18:1-50 NASB
[1] “I love You, O LORD, my strength.” [2] The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. [3] I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies. [4] The cords of death encompassed me, And the torrents of ungodliness terrified me. [5] The cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. [6] In my distress I called upon the LORD, And cried to my God for help; He heard my voice out of His temple, And my cry for help before Him came into His ears. [7] Then the earth shook and quaked; And the foundations of the mountains were trembling And were shaken, because He was angry. [8] Smoke went up out of His nostrils, And fire from His mouth devoured; Coals were kindled by it. [9] He bowed the heavens also, and came down With thick darkness under His feet. [10] He rode upon a cherub and flew; And He sped upon the wings of the wind. [11] He made darkness His hiding place, His canopy around Him, Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies. [12] From the brightness before Him passed His thick clouds, Hailstones and coals of fire. [13] The LORD also thundered in the heavens, And the Most High uttered His voice, Hailstones and coals of fire. [14] He sent out His arrows, and scattered them, And lightning flashes in abundance, and routed them. [15] Then the channels of water appeared, And the foundations of the world were laid bare At Your rebuke, O LORD, At the blast of the breath of Your nostrils. [16] He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. [17] He delivered me from my strong enemy, And from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. [18] They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the LORD was my stay. [19] He brought me forth also into a broad place; He rescued me, because He delighted in me. [20] The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me. [21] For I have kept the ways of the LORD, And have not wickedly departed from my God. [22] For all His ordinances were before me, And I did not put away His statutes from me. [23] I was also blameless with Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity. [24] Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to the cleanness of my hands in His eyes. [25] With the kind You show Yourself kind; With the blameless You show Yourself blameless; [26] With the pure You show Yourself pure, And with the crooked You show Yourself astute. [27] For You save an afflicted people, But haughty eyes You abase. [28] For You light my lamp; The LORD my God illumines my darkness. [29] For by You I can run upon a troop; And by my God I can leap over a wall. [30] As for God, His way is blameless; The word of the LORD is tried; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. [31] For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God, [32] The God who girds me with strength And makes my way blameless? [33] He makes my feet like hinds’ feet, And sets me upon my high places. [34] He trains my hands for battle, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. [35] You have also given me the shield of Your salvation, And Your right hand upholds me; And Your gentleness makes me great. [36] You enlarge my steps under me, And my feet have not slipped. [37] I pursued my enemies and overtook them, And I did not turn back until they were consumed. [38] I shattered them, so that they were not able to rise; They fell under my feet. [39] For You have girded me with strength for battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me. [40] You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me, And I destroyed those who hated me. [41] They cried for help, but there was none to save, Even to the LORD, but He did not answer them. [42] Then I beat them fine as the dust before the wind; I emptied them out as the mire of the streets. [43] You have delivered me from the contentions of the people; You have placed me as head of the nations; A people whom I have not known serve me. [44] As soon as they hear, they obey me; Foreigners submit to me. [45] Foreigners fade away, And come trembling out of their fortresses. [46] The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock; And exalted be the God of my salvation, [47] The God who executes vengeance for me, And subdues peoples under me. [48] He delivers me from my enemies; Surely You lift me above those who rise up against me; You rescue me from the violent man. [49] Therefore I will give thanks to You among the nations, O LORD, And I will sing praises to Your name. [50] He gives great deliverance to His king, And shows lovingkindness to His anointed, To David and his descendants forever.

Psalm 18:20-47 NASB

1 Peter 3:8-17 NASB
[8] To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; [9] not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. [10] For, “The ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT. [11] “He MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT. [12] “For THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS, AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER, BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL.” [13] Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? [14] But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, [15] but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; [16] and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. [17] For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.

Psalm 40:11-17 NASB
[11] You, O LORD, will not withhold Your compassion from me; Your lovingkindness and Your truth will continually preserve me. [12] For evils beyond number have surrounded me; My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; They are more numerous than the hairs of my head, And my heart has failed me. [13] Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; Make haste, O LORD, to help me. [14] Let those be ashamed and humiliated together Who seek my life to destroy it; Let those be turned back and dishonored Who delight in my hurt. [15] Let those be appalled because of their shame Who say to me, “Aha, aha!” [16] Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let those who love Your salvation say continually, “The LORD be magnified!” [17] Since I am afflicted and needy, Let the Lord be mindful of me. You are my help and my deliverer; Do not delay, O my God.

Ruth 2:20 NASB
[20] Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed of the LORD who has not withdrawn his kindness to the living and to the dead.” Again Naomi said to her, “The man is our relative, he is one of our closest relatives.”

Psalm 106:7-8 NASB
[7] Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; They did not remember Your abundant kindnesses, But rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea. [8] Nevertheless He saved them for the sake of His name, That He might make His power known.

Zechariah 7:8-14 NASB
[8] Then the word of the LORD came to Zechariah saying, [9] “Thus has the LORD of hosts said, ‘Dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother; [10] and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.’ [11] But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears from hearing. [12] They made their hearts like flint so that they could not hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets; therefore great wrath came from the LORD of hosts. [13] And just as He called and they would not listen, so they called and I would not listen,” says the LORD of hosts; [14] “but I scattered them with a storm wind among all the nations whom they have not known. Thus the land is desolated behind them so that no one went back and forth, for they made the pleasant land desolate.”

Exodus 33:19 NASB
[19] And He said, “I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the LORD before you; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion.”

Psalm 135:13-18 NASB
[13] Your name, O LORD, is everlasting, Your remembrance, O LORD, throughout all generations. [14] For the LORD will judge His people And will have compassion on His servants. [15] The idols of the nations are but silver and gold, The work of man’s hands. [16] They have mouths, but they do not speak; They have eyes, but they do not see; [17] They have ears, but they do not hear, Nor is there any breath at all in their mouths. [18] Those who make them will be like them, Yes, everyone who trusts in them.

Exodus 34:6-7 NASB
[6] Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; [7] who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”
