John Pavlovitz, can we talk?

John,

I am responding to your post entitled “Trump Supporter, can we talk?”

The bible says David was a man after God’s own heart

“22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.” —  (Acts 13:22 KJV)

What I admire most about David is that he truly believed justice was the Lord’s and His alone.  He demonstrated this on multiple occasions, one in which he could have easily dispatched Saul but did not and forbade his men to do so.  He later explained to Saul, that only evil could come from such evil.

12 May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord pay you back because of the wrong things you have done to me. But I won’t do anything to hurt you. 13 People say, ‘Evil acts come from those who do evil.’ So I won’t do anything to hurt you.” — (1 Samuel 24:12-13 NIRV)

So if this is a man after God’s own heart, and he is giving Justice to the Lord and respecting Saul as a King, what biblical precedent do I have to “resist” the President of the United States of America?

Furthermore as a Christian why should I let FEAR motivate my prayerfully thought out decisions.

Such as….

We know that non-Democrats get Cancer, grow old, lose jobs, and need care when they are sick and disabled and depressed, too—and we know that when this happens, the fear will be as real, the burden as massive, the urgency as great, regardless of your politics or your religion or who you supported in the election. Tragedy, poverty illness, and desperation are nonpartisan in their visitation and they do not discriminate in the damage they do. ” — John Pavlovitz

The Bible says 365 times some variation of “Do not fear”.  God through his Word tells us to be motivated by Love not Fear of man.

In fact the only thing as Christian I fear is not Cancer, not growing old, not losing my job, not needing care when I am sick, disabled or depressed, but God alone.  Death has been conquered. I know the Lord will provide till my last dying breath.

My focus should be on spreading Jesus message because of the Love in my heart from the Holy Spirt, not on any of the above fears.  My concern should be for the lost as priority number one, even so much as to lay my life down for them. For those sheep have much to fear without the Kingdom of Heaven.

I have noticed the use of Matthew 22:39 in many of your blog posts

39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 27:39)

As I am sure you know this in context is in answer to what are God’s greatest commandments.  In fact Jesus was quoting Leviticus 19:18, and essentially summing up God’s commandments.

As a follower of Jesus I must follow His new commandment for us which goes BEYOND Matthew 27:37-39 revealed in both John 13:34 and John 15:17

“34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34 ESV)

Not just my neighbors but also my enemies, the people I disagree with the most.

I am commanded to exhibit self-control through the Holy Spirt and emulate Jesus. This is why the Church not government is called to feed the orphans and the care for the poor and widows.  Much like David says, if the government offends me let God avenge that.

“27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” (James 1:27 ESV)

What does this mean for me?

It means I must abide by 1 Timothy 1-2 and Romans 13:1-14 and continue to show respect to the leader given to me by God regardless of my feelings.

It means I must, even though I may fail, continue to measure my attitude towards life and others by 1 Corinthians 4-7

“4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. ” (1 Corinthians 4-7 ESV)

It means I am onboard for helping the poor and the sick.  I would love to hear about efforts you are doing to directly support the poor and sick.

and above all else it means I will guard my heart against hatred and serve and love others as Jesus loves me.  I can only do this by placing my feet in the footprints that Jesus left me to follow by reading the Word, Praising Him, and praying without cease.

I pray you don’t fall for the same trap that David warned against.
